What are green jobs? A short glossary

Here you will find the most important terms relating to sustainability and green jobs. If you want to know more, just follow the links!

“Green jobs significantly contribute to resource conservation, energy transition and safeguarding an intact environment as well as to sustainable living, economic activity and social change”, is our definition of Green Jobs.

The Ministry of Climate Action and Energy defines Green Jobs as jobs in the environmental sector.

Die ILO (International Labour Organization) defines Green Jobs as jobs in production as well as technology and service sectors that prevent environmental damage and conserve natural resources. Green jobs contribute to

  • improving energy and raw material efficiency
  • limiting greenhouse gas emissions
  • minimizing waste and pollution
  • protecting and restoring ecosystems and
  • supporting adaptation to the effects of climate change

In contrast, “brown jobs” are defined as occupations that are highly likely to be found in polluting sectors.

Development is sustainable if it meets the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs and choose their own lifestyles.

      Goals (SDG)

The United Nations adopted the “Agenda 2030” in 2015. This contains 17 sustainability goals for a future-oriented economic and social system in which inequalities, disadvantages and irreversible environmental pollution no longer have any place worldwide. The SDGs also guide climate goals in Austria.

  Greening Jobs

The greening of the economy is changing the skills, qualifications and tasks required in many existing professions. Greening of jobs is part of the change towards an ecological (Green Transition) and just (Just Transition) economy.

  Greenwashing

This refers to the practice of companies, individuals, institutions, etc. presenting themselves as more environmentally friendly than they actually are. Unsubstantiated, misleading or non-transparent information is highlighted in order to present environmentally harmful practices in a better light. 

 European Green Deal 

To tackle the threats and challenges of the climate crisis and environmental degradation, the European Green Deal was introduced in 2019. It aims to transform Europe's economy into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive one so that net greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced to zero by 2050.
